Attorney General Graham Leung has stated that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) should never be misused to target or punish the political opponents of the Government.
“That would be an abuse of power and unacceptable,” Leung remarked during his maiden speech in Parliament this week.
“Fiji is not a police or totalitarian state. We must avoid returning to the dark days of tyranny, where state agents were routinely dispatched to the homes of those who disagreed with the government,” he added.
Leung emphasized that corruption and poor governance pose significant security challenges that undermine democracy, the rule of law, and economic development.
“FICAC must perform their duties fearlessly, regardless of how difficult or inconvenient it may be, and follow where the evidence leads,” he said.
“This will help restore trust in the government, but FICAC should never again be used as a weapon to target or punish the Government’s political opponents,” Leung concluded.
