FICAC: Upholding Independence Amid Controversy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) asserts its independence and denies any interference from the Government. In an official statement, FICAC emphasized that neither the Government nor any political parties have influenced its investigations or ongoing cases, reaffirming their commitment to following due process.

FICAC referenced a previous press release from March, clarifying that the alleged interference did not originate from the current Coalition Government but was associated with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The commission also noted a letter of complaint from Sayed-Khaiyum to Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, dated April 2024; however, the outcome of this complaint remains unclear.

FICAC acknowledged that significant changes over the past year, including leadership shifts and staff turnover, have impacted the progress of its investigations. Despite these challenges, FICAC affirmed its dedication to completing its pending cases and maintaining its independence as outlined by the law.
