FICAC Takes Action: Allegations Against Commissioner Spark Investigation

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has sent a case involving its Commissioner Barbara Malimali to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for further evaluation. This case concerns allegations of Abuse of Office against Ms. Malimali during her time as the Chair of the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF).

Additionally, FICAC has confirmed the closure of five cases that were previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier this year. The Supervisor of Elections was informed of the case closures on July 24, 2024.

The closed cases include the following:
– Alleged corrupt practices involving the FijiFirst Party related to false declarations specifically against Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Mr. Tito Bainimarama.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mr. Mohammed Saneem concerning collusion and a conflict of interest, with Mr. Arif Ali noted for making a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.
– Complaints against His Excellency, The President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Mr. Charan Jeath Singh.
– A complaint against Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama for submitting false declarations regarding income, assets, and liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for failing to declare overseas travel allowances.

Regarding other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections, FICAC stated that these investigations are ongoing and no comments will be made until they are concluded. FICAC emphasized that it continues to operate normally, and all processes and procedures remain unchanged, handling every complaint with the necessary scrutiny, regardless of the individuals involved.
