The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has asserted its independence, stating that it has not faced any interference from the Government.
In a recent statement, FICAC emphasized that neither the Government nor any political parties have influenced its investigations or ongoing cases, and it is committed to following due process strictly.
The commission referenced a press release from March, clarifying that the perceived interference was attributed to former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, not the current Coalition Government. FICAC also noted Sayed-Khaiyum’s letter of complaint to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, although the outcome of that complaint remains unclear.
FICAC highlighted that it has undergone significant changes over the past year, including leadership shifts and staff turnover, which have impacted the progress of its investigations. However, it reaffirmed its dedication to resolving pending cases and maintaining its independence as mandated by law.
