FICAC Stands Firm on Independence Amid Controversy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) asserts that it operates independently and denies any interference from the Government.

In a recent statement, FICAC emphasized that neither the Government nor any political parties have interfered with its investigations or ongoing cases, affirming that due processes are being strictly followed.

The commission referenced a previous press release from March, clarifying that any alleged interference came not from the current Coalition Government but rather from former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Additionally, FICAC mentioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s letter of complaint to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, although the status of this complaint remains unclear.

FICAC noted significant changes over the past year, including leadership transitions and staff turnover, which have impacted the progress of investigations.

Despite these challenges, FICAC reaffirmed its commitment to resolving outstanding cases while maintaining its independence as mandated by law.
