FICAC Stands Firm: No Government Interference in Investigations

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reiterated its independence, asserting that it has not experienced any interference from the Government. In an official statement, FICAC emphasized that no external political influence has impacted its ongoing investigations or cases, and that due process has been strictly followed.

FICAC referenced a previous press release from March, clarifying that any claims of interference pertained not to the current Coalition Government but to former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. Additionally, they mentioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s complaint letter to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere concerning former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, which was submitted in April 2024; however, the current status of this complaint remains unclear.

In the past year, FICAC has undergone significant changes in leadership and personnel, which they noted has influenced the progress of their investigations. Despite these challenges, FICAC affirmed its commitment to resolving outstanding cases and maintaining its independence as mandated by law.
