FICAC Stands Firm: Independence Amidst Controversy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has affirmed its independence and denied any interference from the Government. In a recent statement, FICAC reiterated that it has not faced any form of interference from the Government or political parties concerning ongoing investigations, and that proper procedures are being followed.

FICAC referenced an earlier press release from March, clarifying that allegations of interference were directed at former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, not the current Coalition Government. The commission also mentioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s complaint letter to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, noting that the status of this complaint remains unclear.

FICAC acknowledged undergoing significant changes over the past year due to new leadership and staff turnover, which has impacted the progress of its investigations. Despite these challenges, FICAC expressed its commitment to completing pending cases and maintaining its independence as mandated by law.
