The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reiterated its pledge to uphold impartiality and base its decisions on evidence. In light of recent remarks from opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu regarding the case of former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya, FICAC wants to assure the public that all inquiries and actions are conducted without bias or undue influence.
The backdrop to this statement involves a complaint received from the Office of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024. This complaint alleged that Ms. Tabuya did not declare her spouse’s income and business interests, in violation of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding, and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an investigation was initiated on April 24, 2024, overseen by former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Ms. Francis Puleiwai.
The investigation revealed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016. Consequently, on August 5, 2024, a recommendation was made to close the case, and this closure was formalized by Ms. Puleiwai on August 12, 2024. The SOE received official notification of the file’s closure on September 20, 2024.
In response to Mr. Seruiratu’s statements, FICAC clarified that the complaint and investigation occurred before Ms. Barbara Malimali assumed her role as the current FICAC Commissioner. The Commission strongly refuted the claims made by the opposition leader, stating that they unjustly undermine the organization’s credibility and mission.
FICAC urges the public to verify facts before expressing views about its operations, emphasizing the importance of responsible discourse—particularly from those in positions of power.
This incident highlights the ongoing theme of political accountability and the essential role of watchdog organizations in promoting transparency in governance. Despite challenges, FICAC’s commitment to integrity in its processes serves as a reassurance to the public about the importance of upholding ethical standards in political conduct.
In summary, FICAC remains steadfast in its duty to investigate allegations without bias, promoting a culture of accountability among public officials.
