FICAC Stands Firm Against Corruption Claims: A Response to Political Controversy

Spread the love

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting investigations impartially and based on solid evidence. This statement comes as a response to remarks made by opposition leader Honourable Inia Seruiratu concerning recent events involving former Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Honourable Lynda Tabuya.

FICAC originally received a complaint from the office of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024, alleging that Ms. Tabuya had not disclosed her spouse’s income and business affiliations, which is a requirement outlined in the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act. In light of the complaint, an investigation was green-lighted on April 24, 2024, by then-Acting Deputy Commissioner Ms. Francis Puleiwai, which confirmed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been legally dissolved in December 2016. Subsequently, a recommendation was made to close the case on August 5, 2024, and formal closure occurred on August 12, 2024, with the SOE being notified of this closure on September 20, 2024.

Honourable Seruiratu expressed concerns regarding FICAC Commissioner Ms. Barbara Malimali’s involvement in the case closure, suggesting that it may have been influenced by Ms. Tabuya. However, FICAC clarified that the investigation and its closure occurred before Ms. Malimali took office as Commissioner, categorically refuting Seruiratu’s claims.

FICAC has expressed disappointment over statements made by Honourable Seruiratu, stating that they undermine the integrity of the Commission’s work. The Commission has urged the public, especially those in leadership roles, to verify facts rigorously before making public assertions regarding its operations.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by anti-corruption bodies in maintaining public trust while navigating political pressures. FICAC’s commitment to transparency and evidence-based decision-making is crucial in reinforcing confidence in its operations.

In summary, the article emphasizes FICAC’s dedication to impartiality while addressing the controversy surrounding the closure of an investigation into a former minister, aiming to clarify the timeline and process of their findings amidst political scrutiny. This serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
