Attorney General Graham Leung has stated that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) should never be used as a tool to remove or punish the government’s political opponents.
Speaking during his maiden speech in Parliament this week, Leung emphasized that such actions would constitute an abuse of power and are unacceptable.
“Fiji is not a police or totalitarian state. We cannot return to the dark days of tyranny where state agents were routinely dispatched to the homes of those who disagreed with the government,” he said.
Leung highlighted that corruption and poor governance pose significant security challenges, undermining democracy, the rule of law, and economic development.
“The FICAC must carry out their duties fearlessly, regardless of how difficult or inconvenient this may be, and follow wherever the facts and evidence lead them,” he stated.
Leung believes that properly executed duties by FICAC will help restore trust in the government. However, he reiterated that FICAC must never again be used as a weapon to target political opponents.
