Attorney General Graham Leung states that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption should never be misused as a tool to eliminate or penalize the Government’s political adversaries.

“That would be an abuse of power and unacceptable,” Leung stated during his maiden speech in Parliament this week.

“Fiji is not a police or totalitarian state. We must not return to the oppressive days when state agents routinely visited the homes of those who disagreed with the government.”

Leung emphasized that corruption and poor governance pose security challenges that undermine democracy, the rule of law, and economic development.

“The FICAC must perform its duties fearlessly, no matter how difficult or inconvenient, and follow the facts and evidence wherever they lead.

“This will help restore trust in the government, but FICAC must never again be used as a weapon to remove or punish the Government’s political opponents.”
