“FICAC Reform: Safeguarding Democracy”

Attorney General Graham Leung has emphasized that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) must never be used as a tool to target or punish the government’s political adversaries.

In his maiden speech in Parliament this week, Leung stated, “That would be an abuse of power and unacceptable.” He further declared that Fiji is not a police or totalitarian state and should not revert to the oppressive days when state agents were sent to the homes of individuals who disagreed with the government.

Leung highlighted that corruption and poor governance pose significant security challenges that undermine democracy, the rule of law, and economic development. He urged FICAC to perform its duties fearlessly and follow the evidence wherever it may lead, despite any difficulties or inconveniences.

“This will help restore trust in the government, but FICAC must never again be used as a weapon to remove or punish the government’s political opponents,” Leung reiterated.
