The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), led by Commissioner Barbara Malimali, has emphasized its commitment to operational independence and impartiality in its operations. During her recent submission to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence about FICAC’s 2018-2020 Annual Reports, Malimali reassured the public that the commission does not target political opponents or engage in any form of political witch hunt.

Malimali stressed that all complaints received by FICAC are treated equally, free from political influence. “Complainants and complaints are treated the same. We are not here to conduct a witch hunt on political opponents,” she asserted, indicating her intention to foster a new narrative around FICAC’s role.

In addition to reaffirming the autonomy of FICAC, which operates without interference from government entities, Malimali noted the importance of internal accountability within her team. She highlighted their responsibility to keep her on the right path, stating, “My team is the people that keep me accountable.”

Looking towards the future, Malimali outlined plans to reinstate effective monitoring and evaluation systems within the organization—systems that have been neglected in the past. She expressed her determination to improve transparency by committing to regular updates to the public, including reinstating monthly media briefings and active engagement on social media.

Malimali acknowledged the prevailing misconceptions about FICAC being politicized, remarking, “We are aware of how we have been viewed as being weaponized for political opponents. We like that view to go. Rome was not built in a day.” She emphasized that public and leadership support is essential for FICAC to adhere to its mandate under the 2013 Constitution.

This commitment to independence and transparency is a hopeful outlook for governance in Fiji, promoting accountability and reinforcing public trust in institutions meant to combat corruption. By transforming perceptions and enhancing communication, FICAC aims to create a more informed and engaged relationship with the public, which is vital for a just and equitable society in Fiji.
