FICAC Must Never Be a Political Weapon

Attorney General Graham Leung has emphasized that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) should never be used as a tool to target or penalize the Government’s political adversaries.

“That would be an abuse of power and unacceptable,” Leung stated during his maiden speech in Parliament this week.

“Fiji is not a police or totalitarian state. We must not return to the dark days of tyranny, where state agents were routinely sent to the homes of those who disagreed with the government.”

Leung pointed out that corruption and poor governance pose significant security challenges that undermine democracy, the rule of law, and economic development.

“FICAC must carry out their duties fearlessly, however difficult or inconvenient, and follow the facts and evidence wherever they lead. This will help restore trust in government, but FICAC must never again be used as a weapon to remove or punish the Government’s political opponents,” he reiterated.
