FICAC: Guarding Independence Amidst Political Echoes

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its independence, asserting that there has been no interference from the Government. In a recent statement, FICAC emphasized that both the Government and political parties have not influenced any of its investigations or ongoing cases, ensuring all due processes are followed.

The commission referenced a previous press release from March, clarifying that any alleged interference was attributed to former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, not the current Coalition Government. They also mentioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s complaint to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, although the current status of that complaint remains unclear.

FICAC noted that significant changes in leadership and staff over the past year have impacted the progress of its investigations. Despite these challenges, FICAC remains dedicated to completing its pending cases and upholding its independence as mandated by law.
