FICAC Defends Integrity Amid Opposition Allegations: What’s Really Happening?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting investigations with impartiality and a focus on evidence-based outcomes. The Commission stressed that its operations are free from bias, favoritism, or fear in light of concerns raised by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya.

FICAC responded to Seruiratu’s comments about a complaint forwarded by the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) on April 5, 2024. This complaint alleged that Ms. Tabuya had not declared her spouse’s income and business interests as mandated by the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding, and Disclosures) Act. Following this, an inquiry was initiated by the former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Francis Puleiwai, on April 24, 2024, which ultimately confirmed that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Robert Semaan had been officially dissolved in December 2016.

On August 5, 2024, investigators recommended filing closure, and Ms. Puleiwai officially closed the case on August 12, 2024. The SOE received formal notice of this closure on September 20, 2024. Importantly, FICAC clarified that neither Ms. Malimali nor any representatives were involved in the divorce proceedings between Tabuya and Semaan when it was in private practice.

In addressing Seruiratu’s assertions that the case was closed based on misleading information, FICAC firmly contested the accuracy of his claims. The Commission pointed out that all actions regarding Ms. Tabuya were completed before Ms. Malimali assumed her role as Commissioner.

FICAC rejected Seruiratu’s remarks as detrimental to its operations and called on the public, especially those in influential roles, to be diligent in verifying facts before making statements about the Commission’s work.

This highlights the importance of transparency in governance and public trust in institutions tasked with maintaining ethical standards. By ensuring accountability and encouraging factual dialogue, FICAC aims to maintain integrity in its operations and mitigate any misinformation.

Overall, FICAC’s commitment to thorough investigations and transparency is a hopeful indication that it prioritizes justice and the rule of law in Fiji.
