The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) asserts its independence and denies any government interference in its operations. In a recent statement, FICAC reiterated that it has not experienced any influence from the Government or political parties regarding its ongoing investigations, affirming that due processes are being rigorously followed.
Referencing a press release from March, FICAC clarified that any prior interference originated from former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, not the current Coalition Government. The commission also mentioned a letter of complaint from Sayed-Khaiyum to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, but the status of that complaint remains unclear.
FICAC acknowledged that significant changes in leadership and staff over the past year have impacted the progress of its investigative cases. Nevertheless, the commission remains dedicated to completing its outstanding cases and upholding its independence as mandated by law.
