FICAC Commissioner Breaks Silence Amid Controversy

Newly appointed FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali has finally addressed her critics a week after taking office. In an interview, she stated that proper procedures were followed prior to her appointment on September 5.

Malimali emphasized that allegations surrounding her selection have been exaggerated and noted, “The best thing for me was not to say anything at all.” She clarified that she resigned from her position as chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Fiji on September 3, ensuring there was no overlap between her roles.

She criticized statements made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry regarding the Judicial Services Commission’s selection process, describing them as irresponsible. Malimali specifically called out Seruiratu for his comments, suggesting he should have addressed the appointment of former Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Francis Kean, who was convicted of murder in 2006.

Malimali asked, “Did he raise a hue and cry about that appointment since Mr. Kean was sentenced to 18 months in jail?” She further cautioned that questioning the integrity of the Acting Chief Justice and the Judicial Services Commission members was also irresponsible and suggested that both Seruiratu and Chaudhry should reflect on their actions post-2006.

In response, Seruiratu advised Malimali to stay focused on the current issue, stating, “I was not responsible for the appointment of the Corrections Commissioner at that time.” He asserted that he was not part of the COC until he became the Leader of the Opposition.

Meanwhile, Chaudhry expressed concerns that Malimali’s appointment while under investigation for abuse of office contradicted the rule of law and compromised good governance principles.
