Ryan Feutz’s stoppage-time header handed South Island United a dramatic 1-0 victory over Fiji’s Bula FC in Auckland, but the result may be remembered as much for the turning points that reshaped the contest: a VAR-upgraded red card to Setareki Hughes and two significant injuries that will affect both clubs’ campaigns. The late winner lifts South Island United’s hopes of securing a semi-final berth in the OFC Pro League Leaders Group, while Bula FC are left with little room for error in their remaining fixtures.
The match was largely uneventful for long stretches but exploded into decisive moments late. With five minutes of added time signalled, Lewis Partridge delivered a pinpoint cross that Ryan Feutz met to head past Didier Desprez, sparking relief for coach Rob Sherman’s side and frustration for the Fijian visitors. The strike capped a tense contest in which chances were scarce and margins fine, and it gives South Island United a significant boost in the race for the top four.
Bula FC’s challenge became considerably harder midway through the first half when Setareki Hughes was initially shown a yellow card for a lunging tackle on substitute Rovu Boyers. Referee Ben Aukwai was summoned for a pitch-side VAR review and, after consultation, upgraded the booking to a red — leaving Bula FC a man down for just over half the match. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Stephane Auvray’s side arguably offered the more dangerous play for long periods of the second half, testing New Zealand goalkeeper Steven Van Dijk and coming close on several occasions.
The Fijian side had earlier seen a goal from Gabiriele Matanisiga ruled out for a foul on Van Dijk, while Roy Krishna also threatened before halftime. Josaia Sela produced two notable efforts after the break, the second curling narrowly over the bar, and a chaotic goal-mouth scramble saw Scott Wara and Matanisiga fail to convert from close range as South Island United scrambled clear. At the other end, Feutz had earlier headed wide from a David Yoo free-kick and then hit the crossbar with a powerful drive before his eventual winner.
The match was also marked by fresh injury setbacks. South Island United confirmed in the days leading up to the game that defender Ollie Van Rijssel had sustained an injury that will rule him out for the remainder of the season — a blow to Sherman’s defensive options as the side chases a semi-final spot. Bula FC suffered early misfortune too: forward Oskar Van Hattum was forced off within the first ten minutes and replaced by Rovu Boyers, disrupting the visitors’ attacking game plan from the outset.
Defensively, South Island United were made to work hard in the closing stages. Adam Supyk cleared Josh Rogerson’s header off the line from a corner after Desprez tipped a near-certain goal onto the bar, and substitute Maikah Dau tested Van Dijk with a powerful strike fed by Krishna. But it was Partridge’s late service and Feutz’s aerial finish that settled the contest and swung momentum in the New Zealand club’s favour at a crucial juncture in the Leaders Group.
The result hands Rob Sherman’s side valuable points as the competition nears its knockout phase, while Bula FC must regroup quickly. Reduced to ten men for more than half the match and now facing injury concerns, the Fijian club has limited margin for error to secure a semi-final place.
