Training during the holiday season presents unique challenges for athletes, highlighted by the captain of the Lavidi Brothers, Sefanaia Vuli, as his team gears up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens next week. Scheduled to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, the Coral Coast Sevens features 16 teams in the men’s division, including the Lavidi Brothers.
Vuli spoke candidly about the obstacles faced during training, noting that many players missed sessions last week due to holiday commitments in their home villages to celebrate Christmas and New Year. He remarked, “It’s always hard to keep up with training this time of the year because there are family functions, feasting, and drinking kava,” yet expressed relief that most team members could participate in their sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes.
With aspirations of rejoining the national sevens squad, Vuli’s dedication shines through. He previously played with the national team and had a brief period with the Kaiviti Silktails before returning to rugby union. He stated, “We are preparing well, we want to be consistent with our fitness and be on the same level with every player; we know that the Coral Coast 7s is one of the toughest sevens in the country.”
The Lavidi Brothers aim to build on their recent success, finishing as runners-up at the 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens in Nausori last month. Vuli hopes to see more players from their team ascend to the national side, inspired by their former captain George Bose’s recent selection. “I’m trying my best to return to the national side, and I’m ready if I’m called to be part of it,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to achieving his goals.
With key national team members Iosefo Namoce and Livai Ikanikoda also part of the squad, the Lavidi Brothers are poised to make a significant impact at the Coral Coast Sevens, showcasing their talent and determination. The spirit of competition and teamwork will be on full display, creating an exciting atmosphere in Sigatoka as they strive for success.
This event not only highlights the challenges of balancing training with festive celebrations but also exemplifies the strong desire among players to elevate their game and pursue national representation. It is a reminder of the resilience and determination athletes exhibit, fueling hopes for a promising performance at the upcoming tournament.
