As the festive season approaches, the National Fire Authority (NFA) has raised alarms over the alarming increase in structural fires. From January to September this year, there have been 152 reported structural fires, resulting in approximately $20.2 million in damages.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted the key causes of these fires, noting that electrical issues remain the predominant cause, followed by arson and unsupervised cooking. With Diwali celebrations on the horizon, Sowane emphasizes the importance of exercising caution, particularly when it comes to fire-related activities.
“While we prepare for the festival of lights, I urge everyone to be vigilant when using fire. Never leave cooking unattended and be responsible with firecrackers,” he stated.
Additionally, Sowane assured the public that the NFA’s water trucks are prepared to respond promptly in case of emergencies. “If a fire occurs, our fire trucks are ready to assist,” he reiterated.
As communities prepare to celebrate, it is vital to prioritize safety to ensure that this Diwali remains a joyful occasion without incidents. By staying responsible and cautious, we can enjoy the festivities while safeguarding our homes and loved ones.
In summary, the NFA is urging the public to be more mindful of fire safety as the festive season arrives, aiming to reduce the risk of fires and protect both property and lives.
