Thirteen individuals were taken into custody yesterday for possessing illegal drugs as law enforcement ramped up efforts during the festive season.
Among those arrested, a 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard were apprehended at the Nadonumai Roadblock, where police discovered small plastic bags containing white crystals. In a separate incident, four individuals in Waiyavi, Lautoka were arrested following a police raid on their residence, which yielded white crystals, drug paraphernalia, and cash suspected to be profits from drug sales.
Additionally, a 32-year-old mechanic from Waimalika Sabeto was arrested at the Sanasana grounds after officers found six bags containing a white crystalline substance. In Sigatoka, a 29-year-old man was apprehended at the Ciri Junction Bus shelter with seven branches of a plant believed to be marijuana. A 46-year-old farmer from Navosa was arrested at the Nadi Bus Stand after police uncovered 161 branches of suspected marijuana and cash presumed to be from drug sales. Finally, a 24-year-old man from Natutu, Ba was arrested at Ba Market, found in possession of eight sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana, wrapped in aluminum foil.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu indicated that these arrests were part of the first day of their festive season operations, and he anticipates that more arrests will follow.
This proactive approach by the police is crucial in combating drug-related issues in the community. Prevention and enforcement efforts during high-risk periods like holiday seasons can lead to safer environments and might deter future drug offenses.
