As the festive season approaches, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is expressing concern over a significant increase in structural fires. From January to September this year, there have already been 152 reported incidents leading to approximately $20.2 million in damages.
In a recent statement, NFA CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted the primary causes of fires over the last five years. Electrical issues remain the leading cause, followed by arson and unsupervised cooking.
With many Fijians preparing for Diwali, Sowane urges the public to be vigilant when engaging with fire-related activities. He emphasized the importance of being cautious during this festive time, noting, “As we get ready for the festival of lights, please do take precaution on the use of fire. Do not leave cooking unattended and use firecrackers responsibly.”
Sowane reassured the community that the NFA’s water trucks are prepared to respond promptly in case of emergencies. “If there’s a fire and the need arises, our fire trucks are ready to step in to help,” he stated.
The message serves as a timely reminder of the importance of safety during a season that celebrates light and joy, encouraging everyone to take proactive measures to protect their homes and loved ones.
In conclusion, as families come together to celebrate Diwali, the NFA’s commitment to fire safety ensures that festive celebrations can proceed without danger, fostering a safer environment for all.
