The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced a plan to enhance enforcement measures aimed at identifying and penalizing violators of road safety regulations during the festive season, a time often associated with increased reckless driving.

As part of this initiative, the LTA will deploy more officers for spot checks, monitor speed limits, and enforce compliance with regulations for Public Service Vehicles (PSV). This decision comes in the wake of a recent road accident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a carrier driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, resulting in injuries to 13 students.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa noted that the Navuniasi incident points to a troubling trend of increasing road incidents, especially those involving PSV drivers. He expressed deep concern over the threat such accidents pose to passengers’ safety, especially children.

He emphasized the need for all drivers, particularly those operating PSVs, to prioritize safety and obey traffic regulations consistently. “Driving safely is not optional—particularly in adverse weather conditions that can complicate vehicle handling and reduce road visibility,” he stated.

Rokosawa underscored the importance of adhering to speed limits and traffic signs, as speeding continues to be a primary cause of road accidents. He reinforced that following speed limits and signage is essential and non-negotiable. Additionally, he advised drivers to avoid distractions, such as using mobile phones, which significantly increase accident risks. He warned that fatigue, negligence, or lack of attention could have serious consequences.

The LTA Chief also called upon the public to remain vigilant, particularly in challenging weather or road circumstances, stating that drivers who put others at risk would face strict legal repercussions, including fines and possible suspension or cancellation of their driving licenses for severe negligence.

Rokosawa concluded by highlighting that road safety is a collective responsibility, and breaches could lead to devastating outcomes. He emphasized that the lives of Fijians are invaluable and that all drivers must prioritize road safety above all else.

By reinforcing these regulations and encouraging a culture of safety, there is hope for a safer festive season, ensuring that all road users can celebrate without the fear of accidents disrupting their festivities.

In summary, LTA is taking proactive steps to enhance road safety enforcement during the festive season, driven by the recent accident as a wake-up call for all drivers.
