Festival Kicks Off with Ambitious Sustainability Goals

The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee is aiming to raise over $280,000 to support its sustainable agriculture project and other similar initiatives. Committee president Zaheen Ibrahim made this announcement during the festival’s opening in Labasa on Saturday.

Ibrahim noted that additional projects are planned, including the development of a sustainable greenhouse garden at the Labasa Divisional Hospital. This year’s festival theme is “Sustainable Agriculture and a Green Economy for the Northern Division,” and the event runs from August 31 to September 7.

The initiative aims to promote self-sufficiency for the hospital, enabling it to meet its food requirements through locally sourced vegetables, which would help reduce costs associated with purchasing from external suppliers.

Nilesh Singh, the chief guest and head of recharge sales and distribution at Vodafone Fiji, commended the committee for organizing projects that benefit the community. He highlighted that the festival offers contestants a chance to represent their communities, urging them to fully utilize this opportunity.

The week-long event will feature twelve queen contestants and three king participants. Ibrahim encouraged residents in the northern region to support the festival, as the revenue from stall fees will be vital for the income-generating activities of stall owners. An additional project includes the construction of washroom facilities at Subrail Park Ground Two, which is expected to cost around $18,000, enhancing the venue’s ability to host more events.
