Festival Aims to Harvest Sustainability and Community Spirit

The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee aims to raise over $280,000 to support its sustainable agriculture project and similar efforts. Committee president Zaheen Ibrahim made this announcement during the festival’s opening in Labasa on Saturday.

Ibrahim noted that plans are in place for other projects, including the development of a sustainable greenhouse garden area at the Labasa Divisional Hospital. This year’s festival theme is “Sustainable Agriculture and a Green Economy for the Northern Division,” and it runs from August 31 to September 7.

The initiative is designed to foster self-sufficiency for the hospital by meeting its food needs, which would reduce the expenses associated with purchasing vegetables from outside sources and ensure that patients receive fresh produce.

Nilesh Singh, chief guest at the festival opening and head of recharge sales and distribution at Vodafone Fiji, commended the committee for implementing projects that support the community. He emphasized that the festival offers contestants a chance to represent their communities and encouraged them to make the most of this opportunity.

The week-long event will feature twelve queen contestants and three king participants. Ibrahim urged the people of northern Fiji to support the festival, reminding them that the proceeds from stall fees are essential for the income generation of stall owners. Another initiative includes the construction of washroom facilities at Subrail Park Ground Two, which will cost approximately $18,000 and improve the venue’s ability to host more events.
