Ferry Frenzy: Navigating the Challenges of Interisland Travel

Spread the love

Ferry services operated by Sea Road, Interlink, and Goundar Shipping serve as a crucial transportation link between the islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, connecting via the ports of Nabouwalu, Natovi, and Ellington. These ferries run continuously, day and night, establishing themselves as an essential means of travel for residents of these islands. However, with such intensive operations come certain risks and challenges that need to be managed effectively to ensure passenger safety and satisfaction.

During a recent trip from Vanua Levu, I experienced firsthand some of the difficulties associated with these ferry and bus services. One notable issue is the requirement for passengers to report for bus boarding one to two hours in advance, coupled with frequent delays in bus arrivals. Similarly, the expectation to board a boat one hour ahead of departure often leads to frustrations when vessels do not arrive on time, especially for vulnerable individuals like the elderly or those with health issues.

Moreover, a concerning situation arises when boats are ready to dock but find another vessel anchored, impeding their entry. Despite signaling with horns multiple times, the anchored boat may not yield the right of way, resulting in delays and potential hazards, such as grounding or collisions. These extended waiting times at sea can be particularly taxing for passengers, leading to significant inconvenience for those who have family members waiting to greet them.

It is essential for the Marine Masters, Marine Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), and relevant government bodies to adopt a more proactive stance in addressing these issues. Ensuring that scheduling for departures and arrivals is consistent and reliable would greatly benefit all passengers.

In summary, while the ferry services are pivotal in connecting the islands, improvements in operational management, adherence to schedules, and effective communication are needed to enhance passenger experiences. With some focused efforts from authorities, the potential for a safe and efficient ferry service can be realized, improving the overall quality of inter-island travel for residents and visitors alike.
