Ferris Wheel Dangers: Is Carnival Fun Worth the Risk?

Spread the love

As the rainy season sets in, concerns have been raised regarding the operation of amusement rides at the Sigatoka Carnival, particularly a Ferris wheel that continued to function during midweek rainfall. Many are alarmed by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department’s decision to allow the ride to operate under such conditions, as it poses serious risks to public safety.

Experts emphasize that large rides, especially vintage ones, are susceptible to structural instability when the ground becomes soft from rain. Even minor tilting of these rides can lead to dangerous situations, such as the disengagement of cables, which could result in uncontrolled spinning of the passenger buckets. This could render the safety brake system ineffective, putting riders in peril.

Drawing from a background in engineering, concerns have been voiced about the potential catastrophic outcomes of such negligence. There is a pressing need for the OHS to assume greater responsibility and enforce thorough inspections—particularly for older rides—before permitting operation during adverse weather conditions.

The safety of individuals must always take precedence, and the community must advocate for strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent any tragic incidents from occurring. There is a collective hope for a safe carnival season, where the well-being of all attendees remains the highest priority, overshadowing convenience and profit motives.

To foster a culture of safety, all stakeholders must unite in prioritizing public security and ensuring that such oversights do not repeat in the future.
