Ferris Wheel Ban Leaves Amusement Business in Crisis

The recent ban on Ferris Wheel operations imposed by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations has left Hassan Shah, the owner of Sha’s Amusement Rides, feeling despondent about the future of his business. With over 40 years of experience in the amusement industry, Mr. Shah expressed his frustration regarding the abruptness of the ban, which was implemented without proper consultation.

“This ban was enacted without following the necessary processes and has jeopardized the long-term viability of my business,” stated Mr. Shah. The impact of the ban has been particularly severe for his team, which once employed over 15 people, but now sees numbers drastically reduced to just two workers.

Mr. Shah insists that throughout the years, his business has maintained a strong safety record with no incidents affecting public safety. He noted the unexpected nature of the ban has thrown his operations into disarray, causing uncertainty for not only him but for many individuals reliant on festival-related employment.

The ban was reportedly put in place following a mechanical incident at the Wairiki 7s in Taveuni, where immediate assistance was required to safely remove riders from the Ferris Wheel. Mr. Shah is now calling on the government to reconsider the ban and explore other solutions that would allow amusement businesses to continue operating while ensuring safety measures are prioritized.

In light of this situation, it’s evident that while the safety of the public is paramount, a balanced approach must be taken to consider the livelihoods of all those who benefit from such businesses. Solutions that enhance safety standards, including regular inspections and mandatory maintenance checks, could provide a pathway for the safe reopening of Ferris Wheels, allowing business owners like Mr. Shah to thrive once again.

Ultimately, while the current outlook appears challenging, there is hope for a resolution that prioritizes community safety while also protecting local jobs and businesses.
