The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has informed the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations that they are unable to release the complete report on the Ferris wheel accident to the media, as it pertains to an ongoing trialable case. This information was disclosed by Agni Deo Singh, the Minister Responsible for Employment, during a parliamentary session last Friday.
Singh explained that this is the reason the Ministry submitted their findings to the ODPP. He noted that the ODPP is currently awaiting the completion of the police investigation and their accompanying recommendations. He confirmed that inquiries are still progressing, with ministry personnel interviewed last week.
“The Fiji Police Force has been conducting its investigation as well,” Singh stated. He also mentioned that the Ministry, through the National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Service, successfully completed thorough investigations into the Ferris wheel incident that occurred last year.
“The full Accident Investigation Report was compiled and submitted to the ODPP in December 2023. The Ministry identified and documented the alleged breaches that led to the accident, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 and its related regulations,” he added. Furthermore, Singh indicated that the Ministry of Public Works also carried out an investigation focused on the mechanical aspects of the ride.
