The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has informed the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations that it cannot release the complete report on the Ferris wheel accident to the media, as the case is still subject to trial.
This information was disclosed by the Minister Responsible for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, during a parliamentary session last Friday. Singh explained that this restriction is the reason the Ministry forwarded its findings to the ODPP.
He mentioned that the ODPP is currently awaiting the completion of the police investigation and their subsequent recommendations. Singh confirmed that investigations are still in progress, with Ministry staff having been interviewed in the past week.
“The Fiji Police Force has been conducting its investigation as well,” Singh stated. He noted that the Ministry, through the National OHS Service, has finalized its comprehensive investigation into the Ferris wheel accident that occurred last year.
“The full Accident Investigation Report was compiled and submitted to the ODPP in December 2023. The Ministry identified and documented the alleged breaches that contributed to the accident, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 and its related regulations,” he added. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works has conducted its investigation into the mechanical components and performed an engineering assessment of the ride.
