The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has informed the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations that the complete report on the Ferris wheel accident cannot be released to the media due to the case being trialable. This information was disclosed by Minister Responsible for Employment Agni Deo Singh during a Parliament session last Friday.
Singh explained that the Ministry submitted its findings to the ODPP for this reason. He indicated that the ODPP is still waiting for the police to finish their investigation and provide their recommendations.
He confirmed that investigations are ongoing, as Ministry staff were interviewed last week. “The Fiji Police Force has been carrying out its investigation as well,” Singh noted.
The Minister stated that the Ministry, via the National OHS Service, has conducted a thorough investigation into the Ferris wheel accident that took place last year. The comprehensive Accident Investigation Report was compiled and submitted to the ODPP in December 2023. The Ministry identified and documented the alleged violations that led to the accident, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 and its related regulations.
Additionally, Singh mentioned that the Ministry of Public Works also carried out an investigation into the mechanical aspects and performed an engineering assessment of the ride.
