The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has informed the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations that the complete report concerning the Ferris wheel accident cannot be disclosed to the media due to its status as a trialable case. This information was presented by Minister Agni Deo Singh in Parliament last Friday.
Singh explained that this restriction is the reason the Ministry submitted its findings to the ODPP. He noted that the ODPP is awaiting the completion of the Police investigation and the submission of their recommendations.
Investigation efforts are still active, with Ministry staff being interviewed last week. “The Fiji Police Force has been conducting its investigation as well,” Singh stated.
He further mentioned that the Ministry, via the National OHS Service, has completed a thorough investigation into the Ferris wheel accident from last year. The complete Accident Investigation Report was compiled and sent to the ODPP in December 2023, detailing identified breaches that contributed to the incident, in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 and its regulations. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works conducted its own investigation on the ride’s mechanical components and performed an engineering examination.
