Ferris Wheel Accident Investigation: What You Need to Know

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has informed the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations that they cannot release the complete report on the Ferris wheel accident to the media, as it is a matter that could go to trial. This information was disclosed by Minister Agni Deo Singh during a parliamentary session last Friday.

Singh explained that the Ministry had submitted its findings to the ODPP for this reason. He further stated that the ODPP is awaiting the completion of the police investigation and their subsequent recommendations.

He confirmed that investigations are still in progress, noting that Ministry staff were interviewed last week. “The Fiji Police Force has been conducting its investigation as well,” Singh added.

The Ministry, through the National OHS Service, finished a thorough investigation into the Ferris wheel accident that took place last year. According to Singh, the complete Accident Investigation Report was compiled and sent to the ODPP in December 2023. The Ministry has identified and documented the alleged violations that contributed to the incident, adhering to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1996 and related regulations.

Additionally, Singh mentioned that the Ministry of Public Works also undertook their own investigation, focusing on the mechanical components and conducting an engineering assessment of the ride.
