Approximately 300 families residing at the Muslim League Squatter Settlement in Nabua are facing potential eviction following the receipt of eviction notices earlier this month. Asha Bibi, a long-time resident of over 30 years, shared that the notifications from the Fiji Muslim League demand that families vacate the premises by the end of December, which has left residents anxious and uncertain about their future.
“We were given little time to prepare, and it’s disheartening that there was no prior dialogue or consultation on this matter,” Ms. Bibi expressed. She fears that this situation could lead to a difficult holiday season for the residents who rely on this settlement for their homes.
The settlement is home to between 3,000 and 4,000 people divided into five distinct zones. Bibi operates a small canteen from which she supports her family, and she, along with her neighbors, is now grappling with the reality of potential displacement.
Another resident, Ainal Nisha, who has lived in the settlement for over 55 years, voiced similar concerns, stating that the families have nowhere else to go and are feeling hopeless. “We are living in despair but holding onto hope,” she remarked, urging the government to assist them in finding alternative housing.
Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, mentioned that his office is in discussions with the Fiji Muslim League to seek solutions to this issue. While the formal situation has not reached his office, he emphasized that engagement with the affected families will be a priority once a new relocation site is identified.
In light of this challenging situation, residents are encouraged to remain hopeful as local authorities seek ways to address their housing needs. The efforts to explore alternative arrangements indicate a willingness to engage collaboratively, suggesting that solutions could be found to support these families during such trying times.
