The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed significant concerns regarding the forthcoming public consultations on the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Work Care Bill 2024, which are set to take place from January 8 to 17, 2025. FCEF contends that the timeline for submission of feedback is too short, and the absence of access to the draft Bills renders the public consultations impractical.
FCEF’s Chief Executive Officer, Edward Bernard, has called on the Ministry of Employment to postpone these consultations until February 2025. He argues that releasing the draft Bills beforehand would enable businesses and workers to prepare adequately for discussions. Moreover, he criticized the allocated three-hour sessions for each city and town as insufficient for thorough representation of views and concerns.
Furthermore, Bernard raised alarm over the fact that the Work Care Bill 2024 has not been vetted by the Employment Relations Advisory Board (ERAB), advocating for its withdrawal until there is a more inclusive dialogue with stakeholders.
This concern highlights the importance of comprehensive engagement in legislative processes, ensuring that all voices are heard, especially those of businesses and employees who will be directly affected by these laws. A constructive dialogue can lead to more effective legislation that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders involved. It is essential for the Ministry of Employment to take these concerns into consideration to foster a collaborative environment moving forward.
