The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has voiced significant concerns regarding the forthcoming nationwide public consultations pertaining to the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Work Care Bill 2024, which are set to take place from January 8 to 17, 2025. The FCEF believes that the brief submission period and lack of access to the draft bills render the consultations impractical.

FCEF CEO Edward Bernard has urged the Ministry of Employment to postpone the consultations to February 2025 and to release the draft bills ahead of time. This would allow businesses and workers a chance to adequately prepare for these discussions. Bernard further criticized the limited allocation of just three hours for each city and town, suggesting that this timeframe is inadequate for meaningful contribution and representation.

Moreover, Bernard raised concerns about the absence of prior discussion of the Work Care Bill 2024 by the Employment Relations Advisory Board (ERAB), and he called for its withdrawal until further stakeholder consultations can take place.

This situation underscores the importance of thorough and inclusive discussions when it comes to employment laws, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered. By advocating for more time and access to the relevant materials, the FCEF is working towards a fair consultation process that could ultimately benefit both workers and businesses in Fiji.

Summary: The FCEF has requested a postponement of upcoming public consultations on employment laws, citing insufficient time for preparation and limited access to draft bills. The organization emphasizes the need for a more inclusive dialogue to ensure effective representation.

As Fiji moves closer to these consultations, there is hope that a collaborative approach can lead to better-informed policies that resonate with both the business community and employees, paving the way for a stronger workforce.
