FCEF Demands Delay in Key Employment Law Consultations

The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed significant concerns regarding the scheduled public consultations for the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Work Care Bill 2024, which are set to take place from January 8 to 17, 2025. FCEF contends that the proposed timeframe for submissions is inadequate, and the absence of access to the draft Bills hampers meaningful participation in the process.

Edward Bernard, the CEO of FCEF, has called on the Ministry of Employment to postpone the consultations until February 2025. He argues that this additional time would allow businesses and workers adequate opportunity to prepare for the discussions. Moreover, he criticized the decision to allocate only three hours for consultations in each city and town, labeling this timeframe as insufficient for thorough representation.

Bernard has also raised concerns about the Work Care Bill 2024, noting that it has not been addressed by the Employment Relations Advisory Board (ERAB). He advocates for the withdrawal of this bill until further engagement with stakeholders can occur.

This situation highlights the importance of thorough stakeholder engagement in legislative processes, ensuring that all voices are heard.
