The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Joel Abraham. Joined the FCCC in 2013, Abraham has served as the organization’s CEO since 2016, during which he has established himself as a transformative leader dedicated to fostering a regulatory environment that emphasizes fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity in Fiji and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Throughout his tenure, Abraham focused on safeguarding consumers from unfair and unethical business practices by enforcing a robust competition and consumer protection framework. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, praised Abraham for his unwavering commitment, stating that consumers in Fiji are in a better position today because of his leadership.
Abraham expressed that his decision to resign was not easy, sharing, “It has been an incredible 13 years with FCCC, and I am filled with a mix of emotions… FCCC is more than an organisation to me; it has been a family, a purpose, and a home. I am confident that I leave FCCC in capable hands, and I am excited about the future that awaits all of you and the Commission.” He emphasized the importance of investing in the staff, asserting that these efforts would continue to yield benefits for Fijian consumers.
Reflecting on his time at FCCC, Abraham stated, “For me, it has always been about the people—serving Fijians, protecting their rights, and building systems that honor their trust.” He acknowledged the collective contribution of the FCCC team in cultivating the organization’s success and reputation.
As Abraham transitions to a regional role, he aims to carry forward the standards of excellence demonstrated at FCCC to the broader Asia-Pacific area. “This is not a goodbye,” he concluded, but “a moment of transition,” expressing his eagerness to collaborate with FCCC in new ways that align with their mutual mission.
The departure of such a significant leader brings a blend of nostalgia and hope. Abraham’s achievements provide an optimistic foundation for the FCCC, suggesting a bright future as they continue to uphold consumer rights and regulate fair competition. His commitment, both to his colleagues and to the consumers of Fiji, underscores a legacy that will continue to influence positive changes within the organization and the region.
