A man who sexually assaulted his daughter multiple times has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, with the requirement to serve 12 years before being eligible for parole. The ruling was issued by Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu in the High Court in Suva last Wednesday.
The 44-year-old was found guilty of two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault against his daughter, which took place between December 1, 2017, when she was 15, and December 31, 2020, when she turned 18. The offenses occurred within the family home while other family members were asleep.
The abuse was revealed after the girl’s mother inquired if her father had done anything inappropriate to her. Following this revelation, the man expressed remorse and vowed to cease his actions; however, he later repeated the offenses in 2020.
