Father’s Heartbreaking Quest for Truth After Son’s Tragic Death

A father is seeking answers from the Ministry of Health, claiming that medical negligence led to the death of his 23-year-old son, Ilaisa Toroca, last Saturday. Sitiveni Johnson from Waiyevo, Taveuni, alleges that his son’s death was caused by excessive bleeding following a tooth extraction at Waiyevo Hospital.

Mr. Johnson accused the hospital’s dental team of mishandling the procedure. “It was a simple tooth extraction that went horribly wrong. The dentist’s actions caused his health to worsen,” he said, heartbroken over his son’s rapid decline after the surgery.

This tragic incident has ignited public outrage on social media, with many users criticizing the Ministry of Health for inadequate service delivery in public healthcare facilities. Attempts to reach the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, for comments on this case were unsuccessful as he declined to respond.

Complaints have also emerged regarding slow patient care and lack of resources in major hospitals, including a recent water shortage issue at Navua Hospital that the ministry addressed only recently.

Mr. Johnson recounted that Ilaisa’s initial visit to Waiyevo Hospital was nearly three weeks ago for two teeth extractions. After persistent bleeding five days later, the family returned to the hospital, where the dentist used cotton wool to apply a temporary solution and then sent them home.

By Friday, Ilaisa was vomiting blood due to ongoing bleeding, prompting a third visit to the hospital. Mr. Johnson claims that despite his urgent requests, the transfer to Labasa Hospital was not arranged in time. He eventually arranged his own flight to Labasa, arriving at 3 PM, but Ilaisa tragically passed away just three hours later, despite medical efforts to save him.

Mr. Johnson reported seeing an X-ray that confirmed excessive internal bleeding, raising questions about the delayed transfer of his son to the hospital. Known for his energetic spirit and hard work, Ilaisa is set to be laid to rest at Pagai Village, Taveuni. An email sent to the President of the Fiji Dental Association, Dr. Parikshath Naidu, went unanswered as the news was published.
