A man who sexually abused his daughter multiple times has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, with 12 years to be served before he is eligible for parole. The ruling was made by Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu in the High Court in Suva last Wednesday.

The 44-year-old faced two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault that occurred between December 1, 2017, when his daughter was 15, and December 31, 2020, when she turned 18. The abuse took place in their home while other family members were asleep.

The case came to light after the girl’s mother inquired whether her father had forced himself on her. Following the revelations, the accused apologized to the family and promised to cease his actions; however, he resumed the abusive behavior in 2020.
