A father of two tragically lost his life while attempting to assist a man in salvaging belongings from his burning house in Nadroumai Village, Nadroga, on Monday afternoon. Mesake Lalai, 47, is reported to have collapsed as he worked to rescue items from a room in the dwelling, which is owned by the Methodist Church and occupied by steward Paula Labalabala.

Labalabala expressed profound sorrow, recognizing Mr. Lalai’s deep commitment to the church and community, stating that he lost his life in a selfless act of love. He added that Lalai was always eager to contribute to the church and the community, often volunteering his efforts in various activities.

According to police spokesperson Ana Naisoro, Lalai was transported to Sigatoka Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigations are ongoing, and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Naisoro noted a rise in recent fire incidents and urged homeowners to take precautions by checking for fire hazards in their properties.

Mr. Lalai is survived by his wife, Unaisi, and their two children. His eldest son, Mitieli Navure, is scheduled to play rugby for the Ratu Kadavulevu School Under 14 team this Saturday at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The funeral is planned for next week.
