Over the weekend, it was revealed that driver fatigue and pedestrian errors were the main causes of several serious accidents. Police reported an incident in Waidalice near Korovou where a fatigued driver lost control of a vehicle, causing it to veer off the Wailau Bridge. This accident occurred before 9pm when the driver allegedly fell asleep. Three of the passengers were admitted to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, while the driver and a fourth passenger were treated and discharged.
Another serious accident occurred along Ratu Mara Rd in Suva, where a 27-year-old man was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man. It is alleged that the victim suddenly crossed the road, leading to the collision. Additionally, four other accidents were recorded, resulting in hospitalizations.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the annual number of road traffic deaths slightly decreased to 1.19 million. Despite this decrease, road traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and youths aged 5–29 years. The latest WHO global status report on road safety 2023 shows a 5 percent decrease in road traffic deaths since 2010, but pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users still face significant risks.
WHO director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that while the number of road crash deaths is decreasing, the rate of improvement is insufficient. He called on countries to prioritize the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users over cars.
Among UN Member States, 108 countries reported a reduction in road traffic-related deaths between 2010 and 2021.
On the local front, there is a clear need for increased awareness about road safety. Many people take life for granted and risk their lives on the roads, often pushing or ignoring traffic rules. Reducing road deaths requires widespread support and engagement from the community. The recent accidents should serve as a reminder of our vulnerability on the roads and the need for change. It is crucial to be aware, vigilant, and to value the welfare of other road users.
