Five individuals narrowly avoided serious injuries in a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Saqani early this morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the driver is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The crash took place around 2 AM in Delaivatu when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road.
One passenger was taken to Savusavu Hospital for further evaluation, while the other occupants were treated for minor injuries and released. SSP Divuana emphasized the dangers posed by drinking and driving, urging all road users to heed warnings related to this critical issue.
Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, SSP Divuana mentioned that from January 1 to November 15, 2024, there have been 272 arrests for driving under the influence. Each of these incidents represents a potential tragedy that could have endangered both the driver’s and the public’s lives.
As the festive season approaches, the Director of Traffic is calling for a change in mindset regarding road safety. “Choosing to drink and drive, or to overindulge in alcohol, increases the risk of accidents significantly. During this time of celebrations, it is essential for everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians—to prioritize road safety and share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe.”
This incident serves as a potent reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the road, particularly during a time associated with celebration and festivity. By committing to safer practices, we can help prevent avoidable accidents and ensure a joyous festive period for all.
In summary, the plea for heightened awareness of road safety, especially in the context of alcohol consumption during celebrations, underlines a communal effort to safeguard lives through responsible choices.
