A woman in her 70s has passed away following a car accident on the Viseisei bypass road yesterday. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana reported that the victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman, who is considered the suspect.
Initial investigations indicate that the suspect lost control of her vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and strike a post. The collision resulted in the vehicle swinging back onto the road, where it then collided with another vehicle.
The suspect is currently hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital, while the driver and passenger of the other vehicle involved in the accident were unharmed. SSP Divuana noted that speeding is believed to be the cause of the incident and reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits for the safety of all road users.
As of now, the road fatality count stands at 37, a decrease from the 60 reported during the same period last year.
