An 80-year-old man has tragically lost his life, while another driver is currently hospitalized, following a serious accident where both vehicles left the road and landed in a ditch. The incident occurred when the two drivers attempted to overtake simultaneously.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, both drivers were promptly transported to Navua Hospital, where the elderly driver from Suva was pronounced dead. The other driver is reported to be in stable condition.
SSP Divuana expressed deep concern regarding the rising number of road accidents and fatalities observed in recent days. Over the past week, three fatalities have been recorded, alongside several serious accidents involving pedestrians. Just this afternoon, yet another fatal accident occurred in Wainadoi, Navua, resulting in the death of one of the drivers involved.
Despite ongoing campaigns aimed at promoting road safety, including billboards and messages on media platforms, the issue of speeding continues to lead to accidents. SSP Divuana highlighted the importance of pedestrian behavior and called upon parents and guardians to actively engage with their children regarding road safety, emphasizing the need to practice safe habits themselves.
Currently, the national road death toll is at 48, which is a decline compared to 78 reported for the same period last year, indicating a potential positive trend despite recent tragic events.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety awareness. By collectively adhering to safe driving practices and encouraging responsible pedestrian behavior, communities can work towards reducing accidents and fatalities on the roads.
