Fashion Meets Philanthropy: $53K Donated to Fiji Cancer Society

PROJECT Bula Mai (PBM) has donated a symbolic cheque of $53,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS), coinciding with the return of the Style Fiji Fashion and Entertainment Show for its 13th consecutive year. The cheque was presented by PBM trustees Marlene Vuniwaqa and Zelda Thomas to Belinda Chan, CEO of FCS, who expressed deep appreciation for PBM’s continuous support.

“Words cannot express how grateful we are to Marlene, Zelda, and the PBM team for their love and commitment to our cause,” Ms. Chan stated. “Our work relies heavily on the generosity of organizations like Style Fiji and PBM, as we strive to help cancer patients.”

She explained that the funds will be utilized to improve services in Western Fiji, an area where FCS faces challenges related to visibility and outreach. Despite having an office in Lautoka, Ms. Chan highlighted that many people remain unaware of its services.

The funds will enhance cancer awareness and provide essential support, including assistance in navigating the healthcare system and obtaining medication. Ms. Chan emphasized that while the society’s efforts are significant, there remains a pressing need for greater support and visibility to effectively assist over 300 individuals across Fiji’s central, western, and northern regions.

The money was raised during PBM and Style Fiji’s annual entertainment event, which aims to financially support cancer organizations. Marlene Vuniwaqa noted that this year’s gala is set for November 30 at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi.

“This year’s event, themed ‘Luxuries of the Orient – Dripping in Pearls,’ will showcase a fashion show featuring seven renowned local designers and stylists,” Ms. Vuniwaqa added. “The Style Fiji and PBM show reaffirms our commitment to supporting the Fiji Cancer Society, which emphasizes cancer research, early detection, and intervention in rural Western communities of Fiji.”
