FASANOC overhauls leadership and strategy to strengthen Team Fiji for the 2026 Commonwealth Games

FASANOC used its Annual General Assembly on April 29 to reset priorities and refresh its governing team as Fiji’s sporting organisations ready for a busy international calendar later this year.

Held at Fiji Olympic House, the assembly brought representatives from national federations together for reports from president Cathy Wong and chief executive Vanessa Kilner, who outlined a shift away from day‑to‑day operations toward stronger board governance, clearer long‑term planning and strategic leadership. Both leaders highlighted capacity building — investing in people, skills and systems — as central to better supporting federations across the country.

Financial sustainability was another prominent theme. Delegates heard plans to lift FASANOC’s brand value and broaden marketing and sponsorship opportunities to underpin programme delivery, athlete pathways and high‑performance preparation. Kilner and Wong signalled that strengthening commercial partnerships will be essential as the committee prepares Team Fiji for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympic Games later this year.

The assembly also confirmed changes to the FASANOC board, with three leadership positions decided. Petero Vatu was reappointed as Vice President Finance, while Della Shaw‑Elder of Weightlifting Fiji and Litia Mario of the Fiji Hockey Federation were elected as Vice Presidents. The new appointments, delegates said, add technical and administrative experience to the board as FASANOC moves into implementation of its strategic priorities.

Outgoing vice presidents Jerome Kado and Prem Narayan were formally acknowledged. Kado is stepping down after reaching the maximum term limit, while Narayan — praised for her legal guidance to the board — was thanked for her contribution during her tenure. The organisation emphasised that the refreshed board will be charged with translating the AGA’s priorities into practical support for administrators, coaches, volunteers and athletes nationwide.

Collaboration across stakeholders remained a central message of the meeting. Participants reiterated a shared commitment to coordinated efforts among federations, government partners and private sponsors to grow sport participation, enhance athlete development pathways, and ensure Team Fiji is competitively prepared for international competitions.

At the heart of the discussions was a concise vision: to inspire Fiji through sport. Delegates said that beyond medals and results, the AGA underscored sport’s role in community cohesion and national pride — and placed governance, capacity and funding squarely at the centre of FASANOC’s work for the remainder of 2026.
