Petero Maciu, a 21-year-old farmer from Nawi, Buca Bay, Cakaudrove, is utilizing his land to secure a better life for himself. Encouraged by his father, Sakapo Tui, Petero began farming at a young age, focusing on the sustainable use of the land.
Living with his five siblings, Petero’s education came to an end in year eight, as he recognized the benefits of agricultural practices that provided him with substantial returns. In 2020, he decided to take charge of his farming journey, aiming to avoid relying on others.
Petero cultivates land owned by the Koronicivaciva clan, growing various crops including yaqona, taro, ginger, coconut, and other vegetables. This year, he has been able to market and sell his yaqona in Labasa, emphasizing the importance of effective land use for better yields.
He sells yaqona in Savusavu markets, with prices ranging from $70 to $80 per kilo. His initial sales have garnered around $11,000. Despite facing challenges, including difficult weather conditions, Petero remains committed to improving his situation and reducing poverty in his community.
As he prepares for his 21st birthday in July, he is also planning to host a celebration, inviting villagers to join in the festivities. Recently, he purchased livestock to enhance his community’s food supply and is keen on acquiring equipment that will assist him in farming.
Petero’s story serves as a significant example for young individuals in his village, encouraging them to make productive use of their time and land resources. He urges the government to provide support for rising farmers to establish their own enterprises and better their lives through sustainable agricultural practices.
He believes in working towards a future where poverty is alleviated through farming and the responsible management of resources.
